Online Fraud Prevention, Detection, Recovery

Microsoft has released a 12-page booklet, titled Online Fraud: Guide to Prevention, Detection, and Recovery, that will arm you with the knowledge you need, to help avoid the most common types of online scams.

Online Frauds

According to the recent Microsoft NCSAM Online Scams Survey, the five most common scams encountered by adults in the U.S. were:

  1. Lottery or “Congratulations, you've won!” scams that promise free things or coupons (44%)
  2. Fake antivirus alert scams that imitate real programs (40%)
  3. Phishing scams using fake email that looks official and encourages people to click it (39%)
  4. Advance fee fraud that features a request for bank account information from someone (such as a “foreign prince”) who needs to transfer money (39%)
  5. Work-from-home scams that promise to “help you start your own business” (38%)

To help consumers combat such scams and stay alert, Microsoft released the Online Fraud : Guide to Prevention, Detection, and Recovery, which contains practical online safety tips and advice. The guide shares tips that will help you prevent falling prey to such identity theft scams. It will help recognize suspicious e-mail messages, and show you ways on how to protect and secure sensitive information, and strengthen computer security.

It will also show you how you can detect if you or any friends of yours are victims of online fraud. Has your identity been compromised? Is your computer compromised? It will answer all these questions and more.

Moreover, should you fall prey to scams and become a victim of online fraud, the guide will also show you quick recovery methods and offer advice on rehabilitation from identity theft.
