FAQ Forthcoming Windows Live Essentials 2011 QFE1 Performance Update

If you are a user of Windows Live Essentials 2011 on Windows Vista or Windows 7 and have enabled Microsoft Update, then an update will be made available in the coming week (Mar 21st, 2011). This update includes a set of performance improvements, targeted bug fixes, and language translation corrections.

Here are some points to be noted :

Please note that this update will be made available for those who have not installed the QFE1 build and are still running the initial release (QFE1 went RTW in Dec 2010). If you are running the version number 15.4.3508.1109, you are running the latest build and have the QFE1 installed. If you're running version 15.4.3502.0922, we highly recommend that you install this update.

You can check to see if you have QFE1 installed by looking at the version number in the About dialog for Messenger or Windows Live Photo Gallery.

This update has been available for download since December 2010, so if you have installed Windows Live Essentials 2011  prior to this, you'll get this update via Microsoft Update.

Will it appear as an optional update in MU on Vista/Win7 ?

QFE1 will be a recommended update in Microsoft Update for existing Windows Live consumers on Windows 7 or Vista. It will be an optional update for non-Windows Live consumers on Windows 7 or Vista. Consumers can choose not to install the recommended update by unchecking the box next to Windows Live Essentials 2011 QFE1 in the list of MU updates.

Will it appear on those Windows 7 or Vista systems without any current Windows Live Essentials application(s) installed when Microsoft Updates is enabled ?

As mentioned, it will be an optional update for non-WL consumers on Windows 7 or Vista. Consumers will have to manually check the box next to WLE 2011 QFE1 to install this release.

Will it automatically upgrade a Windows 7 or Vista unit from 2011 Initial Release to 2011 QFE1 if MU is enabled ?

For consumers who already have WLE installed on their Windows 7 or Vista PC, it is a recommended update. This means that if MU is configured to automatically download and install the update, it will be automatic. When the MU bubble pops - up, consumers can always uncheck the box next to WLE 2011 QFE1 to not install this update.

Will it automatically upgrade a Windows 7 or Vista unit from 2009 QFE2/QFE3 to 2011 QFE1 if MU is enabled ?

Yes, any WL user on Windows 7 or Vista will be updated to WLE 2011 QFE1 if MU is enabled.

What does this update contain?

With the new update of Windows Live Essentials 2011, users will notice performance improvements in Windows Live Messenger. These improvements will result in improved connectivity for China consumers and improved status update (offline/online) for all users worldwide. In Photo Gallery, GPS coordinates will be added to pictures, only after user approval. Another issue resolved in Photo Gallery is related to terms of usage. In certain conditions, users who declined the terms of usage were shown the screen again until they accepted the terms of usage. This has now been fixed. Users who decline the terms of usage once are not shown the screen again.

This optional update will download a package that only includes the new changes from the originally released version. You won't have to go through the entire setup for Windows Live Essentials. You may, however, need to reboot your computer after installation is complete. If you start a new installation, or upgrade to Windows Live Essentials 2011 today, your installation will include QFE1.
