Restore missing Internet Explorer Tile in Windows 8 Start Screen

No matter which version of Windows 8 Operating System you are using Internet Explorer browser is available in 2 styles - Internet Explorer 10 'Metro' app version and Internet Explorer for Desktop. The Metro or Windows App style IE browser has been designed especially for touch-enabled devices such as tablets.

Now in case you set an alternative browser as your default browser, the Metro-styled Internet Explorer tile from the Windows 8 Start Screen may go missing. Or maybe you simply deleted the tile by mistake and want it restored back. To fix this problem and get the missing Internet Explorer tile back on Windows 8 Start Screen, follow these simple instructions.

Get back missing Internet Explorer tile

If you have set some other browser as the default browser, setting Internet Explorer back as the default browser via the Control Panel will help resolve the issue.

In any case, whether you want to set IE as the default browser or not, there is a simpler way, and that is to start typing Internet Explorer, when on the Start Screen. The Internet Explorer app will appear on the left side.

Right-click on it.

At the bottom, you will see the Pin to Start option. Click on it and you will see the Internet Explorer app tile back on your start screen.

Opening command prompt as a User (not admin), entering the command C:\Windows\System32\ie4uinit.exe -UserIconConfig and hitting Enter will also create the IE tile.

If it is the Internet Explorer desktop version shortcut that you want placed on the start screen, open C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer and right-click on iexplore. Select Create a shortcut to create one on the desktop. Rename it to whatever you want and then right-click it and select Pin to Start.

That's it!
