Microsoft has done a great job with Windows 10 so far. The latest upgrade has matured the operating system, and from our point of view, it can stand toe-to-toe with Windows 7 and any given day. The problem is, not everyone tends to like some of the changes made, and would prefer to have some things stay similar to Windows 7.
One of these things is Windows File Explorer. We're certain that some users prefer the Windows 7 design of the file explorer over the Windows 10 version, so, is it possible to change things? Yes, it is. We'll need to use a program known as OldNewExplorer, but bear in mind that this software will make changes to the Windows system, so make backups before moving forward.
Make Windows 10 Explorer look like Windows 7 Explorer
After downloading and installing OldNewExplorer, launch it and get ready to tweak Windows 10 file explorer to look more like Windows 7. It won't be perfect, but it should give users the feeling of using the old operating system, which should be good for most people.
The first thing you'll see is a screen with several options. You'll need to click on Install, then from there, choose from the options below to as seen from the image above. As seen from the image, we can do several changes here to make things better. The option is there to change the appearance to be more like Windows 7, along with enabling the glass UI on the navigational bar.
Not everyone likes the Ribbon bar, but that's not a problem because it can easily be changed by clicking on, “Use command bar instead of Ribbon”.
One particular thing we missed, is the ability to see details of a file in the status bar. With OldNewExplorer, this can be changed with just the click of a button.
OldNewExplorer is extremely simple to understand, and simple to use. There aren't any areas filled with unnecessary settings, just jump in and do what needs to be done. Furthermore, when it came down to changing the file explorer to be more like Windows 7, the software delivered in that regard, and we're happy about that.
