Unity can be used and installed in Ubuntu 20.04 through the Unity Hub. This article shows you how to install Unity in Ubuntu 20.04.

Installing Unity in Ubuntu 20.04

Unity is not available in the Ubuntu 20.04 standard package repository. Therefore, you will need to visit the Unity store webpage to download the Unity Hub for Ubuntu 20.04. The Unity Hub is a standalone application responsible for downloading and managing Unity installations and projects.

Visit the Unity store webpage at the following URL: https://unity3d.com/get-unity/download.

Click the Choose your Unity + download button to download the Unity Hub for Ubuntu 20.04.

If you are working in a team and wish to use Unity for professional game development, then you must select a subscription plan, according to your preferences and needs.

A free version of Unity is also available for users in the Individual category. To download the free version of Unity, select the Individual option, and download the free version. While downloading the free version, make sure that you comply with the given eligibility criteria.

If you are a returning user, click the Go here button, accept the terms and conditions on the next screen, and click the Download Unity Hub button.

If you are a first-time Unity user, click the Start here button, and accept the terms and conditions by clicking the Agree and download button.

At the next screen, select the Save File option and press OK.

The UnityHub.AppImage file will be downloaded in the Downloads directory.

Once the file is downloaded, navigate to the Downloads directory:

$ cd Downloads

Next, it is necessary to make the AppImage file an executable one. Issue the following command to do so:

$ chmod a+x UnityHub.AppImage

Now, run the executable AppImage file:

$ ./UnityHub.AppImage

Read the Unity Terms of Service and agree to them.

If you are running Unity Hub for the first time, click Manage License and log into the Unity Hub through Google, Facebook, or Single.

Click Preferences and select the Install tab.

Add the Unity version by selecting the Add button.

Next, add modules to your install and click Done.

The selected Unity version and modules will install.

When the Unity version and modules install, click the Projects tab, and create a new project.

The Unity project will open, and you can start creating games using Unity immediately.
